The well

Ballybrennan

St Cuan/St Cowan's Holy Well

St Cuán's well is situated at a crossroads on the R730. Two streams join together and run along the west side of the well. A large grotto, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is now present at the site. The well, pictured left, is no longer the main attraction, it is almost hidden under the wall surrounding the grotto. You can see the remains of Kilcowanmore parish church on the hillside, 80m to the NE. I think the well maybe dedicated to St Cuán of Airbhre, who had associations with Waterford and Wexford, see Tobar Chuain, Mothel Abbey and Kilcowan Church, but a pattern was held here, each year, on the 3rd February which is the feast day of St Cuanan Glinne of Moville in County Down.

Situated: At a crossroads, few miles west of Bree on the R730.
